Anning censure motion "jumps the shark": Bernardi

March 20, 2019

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says he will not support a censure motion against Queensland Senator Fraser Anning in its present form.

The South Australian Senator says the wording of the motion, agreed to by both Labor and the Coalition needs to be amended before he'll agree to support it.

The censure is in response to a statement Senator Anning released immediately after last Friday's Christchurch mosque massacre in New Zealand which left 50 people dead and more than 50 others injured.

In that statement Senator Anning said, “The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place,”

The wording of the joint motion from Liberal Senator Mathias Cormann and Labor Senator Penny Wong reads:

Senator Bernardi has told Paul Murray Live on Sky News the language in the motion goes too far and verges on a witch hunt.
