Australian Conservatives Victorian MP Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins says her office received a “barrage of abusive calls” after the same-sex marriage results were announced.
Dr Rachel, who is opposed to same-sex marriage, believes an opinion piece by Premier Daniel Andrews published in The Age fuelled the fire.
“I certainly didn’t think it helped,” she told Neil Mitchell.
“From what my staff are telling me from about 10.05am…the barrage of abusive phone calls began.
In one voicemail, the caller says the MP should be “put down”.
In a statement delivered to Parliament this morning, Dr Rachel said, “I cannot help but reflect on the Premier’s published comments two days ago where he encouraged yes voters to, and I quote, “Get mad – and get even”. Premier – please ask your supporters to stop harassing and threatening my staff.”
Victorian Parliamentary Security have referred the matter to Victorian Police.
