Adelaide City Council re-writing Australia Day

September 07, 2017

Senator Cory Bernardi has attacked as 'rewriting history' the Adelaide City Council's Lord Mayor's proposal to change Australia Day citizenship ceremonies.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese proposed that pre-settlement history statements be included in Adelaide's Australia Day citizenship ceremonies, with a review committee member referring to Aboriginal life as 'survival' of an 'invasion'.

Senator Bernardi said "Australia wasn't invaded. Europeans settled here and began the process of making this country the wonderful place it is today. This nonsense has to stop. It's divisive and sets a dangerous example that history can be rewritten."
