The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has announced it is prepared to strongly defend a plebiscite on homosexual marriage, forming an alliance with Australian Conservatives founder Senator Cory Bernardi who has tabled a 55,000 signature strong petition provided by the ACL.
The petition supports a plebiscite of the Australian people before parliament considers redefining marriage.
"It is significant that 55,000 people are asking 'where is our voice in the parliament'" said Senator Bernardi, "...the Coalition has run away from what Australian Conservatives represent and the people of Australia are asking for. In effect, the agenda of mainstream Australia has been hijacked by a noisy minority."
"And what these two organisations (ACL and Australian Marriage Alliance) are now telling the Coalition is 'Do not take our support for granted.'"
Echoing Senator Bernardi's suggestion that many Australians are already seeking a credible and viable conservative alternative to the current Coalition government, ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton further cautioned that if the Liberal party does fail to preserve traditional marriage then it will see millions of Australians looking to minor conservative parties.
