ABC’s Tonightly ‘too white, too male-centric’: report

June 12, 2018

ABC comedy program Tonightly with Tom Ballard is “too white”, “too male orientated” and should focus more on jokes about race and the perception that people think Australia is a racist country, a leaked internal document reveals.

It is an hilarious irony that the show which used the c-word to attack Conservatives’ candidate Kevin Bailey over the historical racism associated with the namesake of the Victorian seat of Batman, has itself been accused of a form of racism.

In March this year the ABC continued its habit of virtue-signalling on International Women's Day by replacing all of its male presenters with women.

It seems Tonightly has been caught in a less-than-virtuous position in its white-male-dominated content.

While critics have applauded Managing Director Michelle Guthrie’s efforts to ensure that the public broadcaster reflects a greater range of views from indigenous, ethnic and religious groups, they argue she has not done enough to address the lack of political diversity at the ABC amid persistent criticisms the news output has a left-wing bias.
