Conservative Party leader Senator Cory Bernardi says it's time to consider cutting the ABC's budget for online news in the wake of the announcement that the Fairfax media empire is to be merged with the 9 television network.
Senator Bernardi says the taxpayer-funded broadcaster is 'crowding out' commercial media in Australia and is threatening the commercial viability of competing online news sources, something it was never designed to do.
Conservative Party policy is to merge the ABC and SBS, and streamline them to just two national radio networks and two national TV networks.
Senator Bernardi has told Paul Murray Live on Sky News, the ABC is cannibalising Australian commercial media.
