Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has labeled the Prime Minister “hypocritical to the extreme”, as Malcolm Turnbull delayed a party room meeting until this afternoon.
The Prime Minister is promising to call a party room meeting at midday today if he sees a letter signed by 43 Liberal MPs.
Mr Turnbull announced if the spill motion is carried in the party room he won’t stand as a candidate.
He will resign from parliament if he’s toppled as leader.
Senator Bernardi told 2GB’s Ben Fordham yesterday the Prime Minister has “put all precedent aside” by delaying a ballot, and is being “hypocritical to the extreme”.
“I remember when he (Mr Turnbull) lost his opposition leadership, there were about eight names requesting a party room meeting to discuss the leadership and it was called then.
“This is a man prepared to jettison convention because I consider him a man of next to no integrity.”
Senator Bernardi says the Prime Minister has “tried to turn the Liberal Party into something it wasn’t” and it’s backfired.
“I said, when he organised the coup against Tony Abbott, this man will stop at nothing until this party is destroyed and we’re on the cusp of it now.
“If Peter Dutton wins, you have to expect that a number of resignations will take place and some people may go to the cross-bench.
“If Scott Morrison is elected with the help of the Turnbull people… you think maybe the same thing might happen.”
Senator Bernardi predicts Peter Dutton will be the victor if the leadership is contested today.
