52 Australians die every day from smoking-related illnesses: Bernardi

May 02, 2018

Australian Conservatives leader Senator Cory Bernardi said, “52 people in Australia die every day as a result of smoking-related illnesses and it’s time the Federal Government did something about that and legalised nicotine vaping now”.

Senator Bernardi said, “After extensive studies, the 500-year-old Royal College of physicians in the UK has come up with the statistic that vaping is 95% safer than cigarette smoking”.

“The Therapeutic Goods Administration is out of step with what is going on around the world where nicotine vaping is legal, regulated and encouraged by health authorities in preference to smoking cigarettes”.

It’s time for the Health Minister Greg Hunt to step up and it’s time for the parliament to apply some common sense measures to save the premature deaths of 19,000 Australians every year.

The ABC reports The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists has expressed support for e-cigarettes as a "harm minimisation strategy" to improve the health of smokers with a mental illness.

Senator Bernardi has told ABC Radio Adelaide’s Peter Goers, himself a heavy smoker, that nicotine vaping is a proven aid to help cigarette smokers break the habit.
