Australia's population is just about to tick over the 25-million mark. But our expanding number is not just thanks to baby-making.
Conservative Party policy is that we should halve Australia's immigration intake and redefine entry and citizenship criteria based on our economic, social and cultural needs.
Net overseas migration (the number of people moving to Australia from overseas minus the number of Australians leaving to live elsewhere) accounted for about 60 per cent of population growth last year.
And that net overseas migration, combined with the natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) is expected to see the population clock hit 25 million just after 11:00pm.
Apart from the fracturing of our Australian traditions that results from ill-considered immigration decisions, Australia's infrastructure clearly cannot keep up with our increasing population numbers.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has told 2GB we want quality not quantity immigration.
